January play for the PVMGA included a full schedule of events, including Ace of Aces qualifiers, two-day event with Sun Lakes Country Club, Pro Shop selected two-man team select-a-drive, and the annual two-day Presidents Cup play.
The month started out on Jan. 4 with a four-man 2 Net Best Ball Ace of Aces qualifier. The team of Ron Kiel, Steve Ryland, Wes Davis, and Chuck Carothers won first place. There were three teams tied for second place: Chuck Guillaume, Roy Parfitt, Ron Cox, and Don Reese; Scott Price, Peter Gorman, Denny Golden, and Bob Kruse; and Mike Pasternak, Pat Holien, Scott Salmonson, and Glen Harry.
Jan. 9 and 11 saw teams comprised of two SLCC and two PVMGA players playing first at Sun Lakes Country Club on Jan. 9 and then Palo Verde on Jan. 11. Lunch followed play each day. The team of Randy Berner, Doug Belton, Len Rosati, and Joe Marr finished in first place, followed by the second place team of Ron Stecker, Joe Byrne, Jim Hendrickson, and Don Reese. Coming in third place was the team of Christian Stokes, Gary Brinkman, Linn Henderson, and Ray Simpson.
Jan. 18 was a flighted 2-man select a drive low net game, with the teams selected by the Pro Shop. Flight 1: First place was Pat Duncan and Mike Rufert. There were two teams tied for second place: Terry Denefe and Don Peterson and Bob Brabant and Peter Gorman. Flight 2: First place was team Chris Halweg and Tom Gartner, second place was Gregg Lorimor and Don Bartolo, and third place was Chuck Guilluame and John Kane. Flight 3 was won by the team of Joe Byrne and Richard Koon, second place was Linn Henderson and Tom Jeub, and there was a tie for third place between the teams of Pat Holien and Gary Zahnow and Wes Davis and Don Reese. Flight 4 was led by the first-place team of Bob Kruse and Rick Onken. In second place was Cliff Joyes and Keith Wilson, with third place going to Barry Walcker and John Kuchera.
Jan. 25 and 26 was this year’s Presidents Cup. Congratulations to overall winner and this year’s Champion Marko Sowa with a winning score of 120! Second place overall was Joe Byrne with a score of 121. Great playing for both. Flight 1 results were Marko in first place, followed by Christian Stokes in second place and Sam Selby in third. The Flight 2 winner was Steve Ryland, second place was Ken Verbeck, with Roy Parfitt and Tom Rainville in a tie for third. The Flight 3 winner was Joe Byrne, followed by Gerald Kerby and Cliff Joyes in second and third place. The Flight 4 winner was Rick Onken, second place was Arve Moser, and third place was Gary Zahnow.
