Temperatures are up, the sun is shining and our joints are aching a little less! There are reasons we choose to live in the desert!
Our February report starts with the Sweetheart Tournament held the day before Valentine’s Day. The winning foursome, by a large margin, included Jack Hill, Barb Hill, Roger Wilson and Marky Wilson. Congratulations! This event was followed by a luncheon enjoyed by all of the “sweetheart” participants.
The afternoon Best Ball event was tied with scores of 102. The winning teams consisted of Arnie Bannerman, Tony Huffman, Paul Hester and Bob Elliott; and David Florence, Barry Mostovoy, Gene Vogt and Harry Martin.
A Home and Home Tournament between Palo Verde Country Club and Fountain of the Sun Country Club took place on February 18 at Fountain of the Sun and on February 20 at Palo Verde Country Club. The four-man teams were comprised of two members from each club and with a combined total score of 191; the winning players from Fountain of the Sun were George Hier and John Larkin. The Palo Verde champs were Phil Hollevoet and Gary Zahnow.
A Select-a-Drive contest the afternoon of February 20 was won by Milt Owen, Dennis Grendahl, Tony Huffman and young Marcel Grossman, with a score of 88!
The premier event of the year, the Club Championship, was contested over 36 holes, with 18 hole rounds played on February 27 and March 5.
Jerry Davis won the Club Championship with a score of 130 and Mike Lorimer followed with a score of 136. Dick Martin won the Masters Championship with a score of 146. Flight winners were Jack Hill, John Mitchell, Dan Bottiglieri and Richard Koon.
The afternoon Best Ball event was won by Tony Forbes, Jim Roberts, Wally Cornelius and Budd Livingstone.
