June was National Pet Preparedness Month and Rover’s Rest Stop Kids want their cousins to be prepared all the time, not just June! Dr. Karen Becker shared some very helpful tips to protect our Kids—www.barkandwhiskers.com.
Reality is that disasters happen whether house fires, floods, wildfires, or power outages. ASPCA survey indicates that 83% of pet owners live in affected areas and fewer than half have an emergency plan. Nearly 20% evacuated without their pets, sometimes leaving them behind for days or weeks.
You need a plan as to where you will go for shelter, with family, in hotels, or to a nearby city. Consider this too the times you are not home, working or running errands. Post a sticker alert on a front window or door with the number of pets inside and what kind. Be sure to print your plan, put one in the emergency kit and a copy with anyone that would watch your pets while you are away.
Your Go-Bag should include food and water for three to seven days with collapsible bowls and manual can opener. A two week supply of medications. In a waterproof folder, put medical records including vaccination record, microchip number, and your veterinarian’s contact information, as well as a photo of you and your pet for identification purposes. A carrier, leash, harness, and collar with current tags. A flashlight, first aid supplies, sanitation supplies including trash bags, poop bags, paper towels, potty pads, pet-safe cleaning wipes and litter box for kitties. Don’t forget the comfort items like a favorite blanket or toy.
Practice with your pet to accustom them with carriers and car rides. Sign up for your city or county’s emergency notifications. You and your pet will be thankful!
For in town emergencies consider registering for Rover’s Rest Stop Emergency Program. If you encounter a trip such as to the hospital, Rover’s Rest Stop will pick up and watch your pets until your return.
