Restless Minds draws aim at country’s gun situation

The Restless Minds group begins its 2015-16 season with a discussion of one of the most divisive topics in American society – guns.

The discussion will be held Tuesday, September 8. The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month, September through May, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Sewing Room of Oakwood’s Arts and Crafts Center.

Restless Minds is an informal discussion group open to all people with inquisitive, open minds. There are no dues or sign-up requirements. Just show up and participate.

September discussion leader Ev Rockwood has chosen a clearly provocative lead question for the evening. “Should gun ownership continue to be legal?”

He plans to explore such questions as:

Do gun ownership and carry laws deter crime?

Should we have stricter laws related to gun ownership and registration?

Assault rifles – what are they, really?

The Restless Minds discussion comes a few weeks after it was revealed that, for the third straight year, Guns & Ammo magazine has ranked Arizona the best state in the nation for gun ownership. “Arizona combines strong laws with an unmatched shooting culture and a strong industry presence,” Guns & Ammo said.

On the other side of the ledger, the gun-control advocating Brady Campaign recently dubbed Arizona as the easiest state for criminals to get access to guns.
