Rising Layoffs Strain Food Banks

Ellen Engel

Matthew’s Crossing Food Bank was established with a mission to combat hunger within the community. Initially, the organization had modest beginnings but has grown significantly to address the increasing needs.

Matthew’s Crossing was formed and became a 501(c)(3) community-based, nonprofit organization serving the working poor. From its humble beginnings of serving 800 people in its first year, Matthew’s Crossing Food Bank currently serves more than 124,000 people in need each year with the help and dedication of more than 70 regular volunteers and 150 seasonal volunteers working to fulfill its mission.

America is often seen as a land of plenty, but hunger is widespread. Many assume hunger affects only small parts of society or certain areas, but this is not the case. Millions of Americans, including hard-working adults, children, and seniors, are experiencing hunger and going without food for meals for days.

Our donors in Sun Lakes have been with us since 2008. The Sun Lakes Bridge Club donated 41 pounds of food and $45. Unity Church of Sun Lakes donated 65 pounds of food and $205. The Democratic Club donated 36 pounds of food and $45. Our total donations this month are 142 pounds of food and $260.
