Rotarians—People of Action

Dr. Honora Norton, RCSL Public Image Chair

Rotary Club of Sun Lakes Rotarians are “people of action.” The club recently participated in East Valley community service and education projects:

Mentoring and leading AWIM (A World in Motion) Jet Toy competition races at fifth grade classes of CUSD’s Fulton and Carlson Elementary Schools and Gila Indian Reservation Schools. This RCSL project partners with Society of Engineers (SAE) and ASU Engineering School students. Per Project Chair Gary Kay, the club received several hundred personalized thank you notes sent by the students participating in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning experience.

Per RCSL Dictionary Project Lead Roger Edmonds, more than 90,000 third grade students have received RCSL dictionaries for the past 22 years. This year, RCSL members presented dictionaries to students at CUSD and Gila River Reservation elementary schools. Students sent personalized thank you notes to the club.

RCSL members via the club’s Peace Builders Project monthly collect and deliver personal hygiene and snack items to the Hamilton High School Food Pantry for students and families in need. And they collected 2,300 pounds of food and 40 gift certificates for CUSD’s Chandler Galveston Elementary School. Forty families will benefit this year.

Rotary Meetings Include Noted Speakers

Dr. Honora Norton, RCSL Public Image Director

Starting in January, Rotary Club of Sun Lakes (RCSL) changed the times of its meetings. The group now meets every Tuesday at 4 p.m. (4 p.m. social time, 4:30 p.m. light dinner, and 5 to 6 p.m. program), except for the third Tuesday of the month when the club meets at 6:30 a.m. for breakfast, with the program from 7 to 8 a.m., followed by the club’s board meeting. There is no meeting on the fifth Tuesday of the month. Meetings are held at Cottonwood’s Saguaro Room, 25630 S. Brentwood Drive in Sun Lakes.

The key to an RCSL meeting is its program. The members line up interesting and informative speakers at each meeting. At its last meeting in December, the group was honored to have City of Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke provide a “What’s happening in Chandler” update. A quote from the meeting: “It’s the American dream to be hired in Chandler—a top destination for families and young professionals.”
