As of the beginning of July, we’re nearly halfway through our summer softball season. Our 22-week season started on April 29 and continues through Sept. 18. Doubleheaders are played every Tuesday and Thursday morning, with the first pitch at 7:30 a.m. That’s an attempt to “beat the heat,” but that doesn’t always work, especially on days when it’s heading for 115 degrees!
The summer session is more “recreational” than our other sessions, but there’s a lot of competitive games nonetheless. Players from both our Lakes and Sun Divisions participate in the summer program. It takes many volunteers to make the summer program a success. Thanks to Summer League Coordinator Dennis Kennedy; Team Managers Larry Maggard, Alex Santucci, and Kim Van Nausdle; scorers Cyndy Hilby, Vern and Janet Rodgers, Jim Entwistle, and Dennis LePore; umpires Joe Byrne, Joe Commisto, Chris Jensen, Dennis Kennedy, Barron Leibert, and Craig Porchardt; and Field Prep Coordinator Gary Hillabolt. As Hillary Clinton wrote, “It takes a village,” not only to raise a child, but to run a softball league!
We were saddened and shocked to learn of the unexpected passing of SLSSA member Gordon Beraud. Gordon had been playing in our league for over five years. His gregarious personality will be missed by all. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
