Sun Lakes Chess Club Second Annual Tournament

Doug Shields

The Sun Lakes Chess Club recently hosted its Second Annual Chess Tournament, which occurred over four consecutive Saturdays in March and April (one game per week).

We wish to congratulate our top finishers: Dave Alexander (first place), Mark Knight (second place), and Jon Heimarck and Rick Whitney (tied for third place).

The field of competition was fierce, with Jerry Dew, Dave Thomas, Jim Gabriez, Bob Dodd, Mike Rice, Anna Van Gundy, Joyce Recupido, Doug Shields, and our longest standing club member Arthur Fink all vying for the win each week.

Our heartfelt thanks and congratulations to everyone who chose to compete! We’d also like to send out a special thank you to our club organizer Rick Whitney for his tireless efforts to ensure a positive experience for each of us.

The Sun Lakes Chess Club meets every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Arts & Crafts Room (A-8) in the Cottonwood Country Club. There is no cost and no membership or residency requirement. All ages and playing strengths are welcome. Chess sets are provided, as well as clocks if you need them. Just show up when you want, play as much chess as you’d like, and have fun! Why not join us this Saturday?

We provide a free group beginner chess lesson from 10 to 11 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month. The lesson is led by one or more of our more experienced players and is taught with the newer player in mind.

If you would like to know more about the club, feel free to reach out to Rick Whitney at 425-232-6787. You can also check out our Sun Lakes Chess Club Facebook group page at www.facebook.com/groups/9384375458272491.

We hope to see you soon!
