Great Way to Ease Into Acting
Have you ever thought you might like to try your hand at acting but were afraid to audition for a role in a play? Well, here is the perfect opportunity to get a feel for entertaining without the stress of too much character analysis, lots of lines, tons of rehearsals, or a judgmental audience. Sun Lakes Community Theatre’s Children’s Theatre is holding open auditions on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 10 a.m. at Risen Savior Lutheran Church on Alma School Road.
There are speaking roles and non-speaking roles, and all costumes are supplied. You can even play multiple parts if you wish. The audiences consist of Chandler Unified School District kindergarten and 1st grade students. They are the most appreciative audiences you could ever play for! The show is an adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ book Horton Hatches the Egg.

Talented, Compassionate, and Fun

Born into a musical family, Herman Young has loved singing all his life. “I was a skinny kid,” he said with a laugh. As a result, he was bullied all through school. Born in Detroit, Mich., Herman would come home from school, put his father’s old records on the phonograph, and sing along with them. That was when he was happiest—when he sang. And he’s still doing it all these years later. You might remember his stunning performance of “Teach Me Tonight” in the 2025 Variety Show last March at SLCC.
Herman has led an interesting and fulfilling life before landing in Sun Lakes. Directly after high school, he enlisted in the Navy, knowing that with the number 56 on his draft card, he was likely going to be called into service anyway. The Navy trained him to be a Navy Medical Corpsman. And that’s where he met his first wife while training in Great Lakes, Ill. Herman served six years in the Navy and then applied those skills to a career as a medical and surgical technician. He loved his job and caring for people. He shared his passion with others by also becoming a teacher at the local community college. He spent 21 years pursuing his purpose.
After a divorce, he met his present wife Delilah online. “I never thought I would move to Arizona,” he stated. But they married and built a home together here in 2011. He got a surgical tech job at Banner Desert and was eventually recruited to be the director of the Surgical Technician program at East Valley Institute of Technology. He worked there for a couple of years, then he and his wife decided to retire to Sun Lakes in 2017. He loves it here.
But not having a job to get up and go to soon wore on Herman. Always an early riser, he sought something to keep him motivated and busy. For three years he found himself working as a checkout clerk at Albertsons. Finding his creativity not challenged, he continued to look for something else, something that might bring him back to his true love—singing. It happened that he and his wife attended a party at some friends’ home. They had a karaoke machine set up. He was hooked as soon as the mic hit his hand. It wasn’t long before Herman had his own system, which he improved as time went by. A friend joined him to provide more manpower, and the next thing he knew, they had a growing and exciting karaoke and DJ business!
He was singing at a Cottonwood karaoke night when SLCT member Cari Scholes asked him to try out for the Variety Show. He soon joined SLCT and has been volunteering ever since. “Meeting people who are exciting, innovative, and creative is the best reason to consider joining Sun Lakes Community Theatre,” he said. We’re sure glad he did.
