Sheila Neville Johnson

SLCT Attracts Creative Genius

When Sheila Neville Johnson attended the Sun Lakes Community Theatre (SLCT) happy hour/general meeting just one year ago, no one had any idea how much she would bring to the party. It became evident in short order, though, as it was only a month or so later that she was entertaining members with her quick-witted stand-up comedy routine. Having begun performing “clean” comedy at age 49, she has an impressive resume. She has appeared at Comedy Off Main Street and in the showcase Stand-Up Live. She was a closer for the female comedy group That’s What She Said, as well. She also occasionally sings at Open Mic Nights here in Sun Lakes at Grill on the Green and Mulligans. But, oh, there is so much more to this beautiful, vivacious woman.

She was born in Boston and attended the Massachusetts College of Arts, transferring to the Art Institute of Atlanta to pursue her love of fashion design. She was involved in design, marketing, merchandising, and illustration. She began working in the industry but quickly realized that it wasn’t a good fit for her talents. “I was shocked to find that what I created actually belonged to someone else,” she said. Meanwhile, she was dabbling with the community theater in Atlanta. After seeing The Wiz on Broadway, she knew that costume and make-up design was a perfect outlet for her creative talent.

At that same SLCT meeting she attended last year, an announcement was made that another local community group, the Fun Lakers, was looking for Hollywood star impersonators for an upcoming party. Sheila couldn’t wait to volunteer. She became Diana Ross for the night, and she had a blast. She enlisted her mother to be Billie Holiday and her friend to be a ‘20s flapper girl. Her costuming and make-up were spot-on.

She was asked to be house manager for SLCT’s recent Night of One Acts and did an outstanding job. She was organized and worked well with all the volunteers, even sending personal thank you notes to each person who worked the five performances. “I loved getting to see all the different aspects of putting a show on and all the different jobs involved. I hope to do each job at least once,” she added.

Now, Sheila has agreed to help promote SLCT at the upcoming HOA Community Days in October. She will be designing the theatre group’s table and doing her best to grab the attention of passersby. No doubt she’ll be successful at that, too. Sheila possesses a multitude of creative talents, and SLCT is fortunate to have her as a member.
