SLCC Library Happenings
Sharon Lavender
Book lovers can get very excited to find an author or particular book they have been looking for on the shelves of our library. The SLCC librarians make every effort to keep popular authors in our collection many years after the publication date. We have several copies of the Tony Hillerman mystery series featuring Navajo police officers Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee. Before he passed away in 2008, Hillerman wrote 18 books that are steeped with Navajo culture and beliefs, along with some good old-fashioned mystery plots. Just reading about the geography of the vast Navajo Nation makes you want to visit that area of the southwest. Hopefully, these books will never go out of style.
The first book Hillerman wrote in his mystery series is The Blessing Way (1970). Lt. Joe Leaphorn is quietly working to learn if a man has been murdered by a Wolf-Witch or a killer who is impersonating a supernatural being. Officer Chee is not introduced into the series until later books. Chee adds the tension of older vs. younger officers. Interestingly, the younger Chee is striving to cope with being an officer while learning and practicing the Traditional Navajo beliefs. The older Leaphorn is no longer a believer. And yet, these two men must work together, and learn to respect, if not like each other. For the many readers who mourned the death of Tony Hillerman, Tony’s daughter has continued the series with two additional books. We have Anne Hillerman’s first book in our collection. Tony Hillerman received many awards for his writing and two of his books were made into TV movies. For more on this wonderful writer, and a list of the books he wrote, Google him. Then head for our library.
We have new releases that may be checked out for two weeks. Look for Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks, The Pirates by Clive Cussler, Home by Harlan Coban, Sex, Lies and Money by Stuart Woods, The Whistler by John Grisham and The Wrong Side of Goodbye written by Michael Connelly.
All residents of the Sun Lakes communities, including SunBird, are welcome to use our library. Please be sure to return all books with their cover. Your donations are always appreciated.
