Sun Lakes Parkinson’s Support Group: Shaking Hands Network

Pam Wortman

There is a new support group in Sun Lakes for people with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers/support. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive, neurological condition that affects movement, balance, and often mood. Living with PD can bring about both physical and emotional challenges, not only for those diagnosed but also for their families and caregivers. The new support group, called Shaking Hands Network, offers a welcoming space for sharing experiences, learning, and finding encouragement.

Pam Wortman, a lifelong educator who also suffers from Parkinson’s, is the group facilitator. She serves as a diplomat for the Parkinson’s Foundation. The Parkinson’s Foundation is one of the most respected national groups dedicated to bringing awareness to the latest news, research, and information to Parkinson Wellness Projects (PWP).

The goal of Shaking Hands Network is to provide information and resources for PWP. The meetings will be dedicated to offering practical advice, sharing tips for managing and navigating PD, offering caregiver support, providing research-backed information and handouts, and offering opportunities for networking, etc.

Shaking Hands Network’s initial meeting will be held on Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church Sun Lakes on the corner of Riggs and Dobson, 9535 E. Riggs Road, Sun Lakes. Please text 240-309-7325 for more information, or email shakinghands0652@myyahoo.com and include “Meeting” in the subject line.

If you cannot make the initial meeting, send a friend/caregiver in your place. This is a meet-n-greet where we will discuss best dates/times moving forward. Pam will use this meeting to share her vision for the group and to share ideas for future meetings. Shoot a text to 240-309-7325 or an email to shakinghands0652@myyahoo.com.

If you or a loved one is living with Parkinson’s, consider joining Shaking Hands Network. Together, we can face the challenges and celebrate the victories along the journey.
