Posseman Ken Hinatsu Wins Above & Beyond Award

Bill Shedd

Posseman Ken Hinatsu was recently honored at the American Red Cross Breakfast in October. Hinatsu was awarded the Above & Beyond Award.

The Above & Beyond Award honors individuals who not only host blood drives consistently, but also have maintained high levels of success due to the wonderful work of the BPLs (Blood Program Leaders). Without these individuals, who sacrifice their time and energy, these drives and the amount of blood they collect would simply be less. Each opportunity to host a blood drive is a challenge they accept willingly and take measures beyond the norm to ensure that patients in need receive the lifesaving treatment they require.

The Sun Lakes Sheriff’s Posse is a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit and has become a hub of blood donations for the community. Using their strong community relationships, each drive is a great success that delivers, no matter the time of year. Ken is a fantastic leader for this blood donation program, and they have recently surpassed collecting more than 1,000 units of blood total and even threw a party to celebrate the milestone.

Posseman Hinatsu spearheaded the Posse to hold these drives starting back in 2020. Since then, the Sun Lakes Sheriff’s Posse team averages at least six blood drives a year and has collected almost 1,100 units of blood. The Sun Lakes and SunBird communities have made these blood drives a huge success.

The Sun Lakes Sheriff’s Posse and the American Red Cross will hold our next blood drive on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Sun Lakes Sheriff’s Posse Office, 9531 E. Riggs Road. Please be sure to schedule your appointment by going to our website at www.sunlakesposse.org and click on the link to pre-register.

Donations to Flood Victims

Bill Shedd

At the Sun Lakes Sheriff’s Posse’s recent Shred-A-Thon and Drug Take-Back event, the Posse asked for donations for the Globe/Miami area flood victims. Thanks to generous donations from the attendees, $1,670 was collected at the event, coupled with a $1,000 donation from the American Family Insurance Corporate Offices, a $100 gift card donation from Costco, and $400 from the Sun Lakes Posse. The Sun Lakes Sheriff’s Posse, in conjunction with our Enforcement Support Division and our partners at Costco, delivered over $3,000 worth of supplies and water to the Globe/Miami area for the residents who suffered damage from the recent rains. To date, the Sun Lakes Sheriff’s Posse community efforts have contributed in excess of $5,000 to the Globe/Miami flood relief. Thank you for your contributions.

Another Successful Shred-A-Thon

Bill Shedd

The semi-annual National Drug Take-Back and Shred-A-Thon event was held on Oct. 25 in Sun Lakes by the Sun Lakes Sheriff’s Posse, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, and in cooperation with The Heroes Home Team. This fall event was a big success, with more than 475 cars going through the line. We shredded over 20,000 pounds of paper and collected more than 19 boxes of unwanted drugs, which was the most collected county-wide.

The Sun Lakes Sheriff’s Posse wants to thank the Attorney General’s Office, the Heroes Home Team, and all the volunteers who made this event a success. Our next Drug Take-Back and Shred-A-Thon will be held in the Spring of 2026.
