The birds are coming – get ready for the annual Tour de Bird

Gwen Grace

The fall bird migration will be starting by the time the September Splash is in your hands! American Wigeons will be splashing down on our Sun Lakes ponds, having flown 4400 miles from Northern Canada. Then, ring-necked ducks and Canada geese will come. Fall will be here!

Desert Rivers Audubon will be offering free bird walks at Gilbert Water Park at Guadalupe and Greenfield in Gilbert on Saturday, September 21, from 8:00 a.m. until noon and at the Chandler Veterans Oasis Park on October 5 at 8:00 a.m. until noon.

Don’t have binoculars? That’s okay, we have them for you to use.

On November 2, the annual Tour de Bird will take place. Desert Rivers Audubon offers a look into yards that are supportive of bird life. Hosts will display their native plants, water features, and hide-a-ways for birds. This year, it will begin in Cottonwood on Beech Creek Drive. Then a rare look at four homes in Ahwatukee, and five more places will round out this year’s Tour de Bird. Maps will be available. Tickets are available at the first house in Sun Lakes or online at www.desertriversaudubon.org.
