A few of us (or maybe more) may remember the 1966 Nancy Sinatra song “These Boots Are Made For Walkin” but we highly recommend you pass on the boots part! We are talking about the annual Walkathon that will take place on October 24.
The Walkathon is an annual event that raises funds for our amazing Sun Lakes Fire Departments’ food fund. Although their shifts are incredibly long, 48 hour ones to be exact, they must provide their own meals while also providing for their families. These individuals respond to whatever is needed and whenever needed. No clocking out in an emergency situation. Our community relies on them for more ways than one can count. They are always there for us in our worst and sometimes scariest times.
Over the years, The Greater Sun Lakes Community Foundation has annually or semi-annually given grants to help with their food expenses. As we receive donations from memorials or in honor of individuals, funds raised from our major events, the Holiday Gala and the Hoedown, we have supported them, dividing the funds between the two departments that serve us. In the past, they were granted on an average of $6,000 per year.
Last year was amazing thanks to all who participated in the Walkathon. The Foundation was elated to present them a $22,000 grant thanks to all the donors and those who participated in the Walkathon event!
Please plan to participate this year. Starting at Oakwood Country Club, October 24! Watch for information regarding registration coming soon.
Let’s sing along with Nancy and “Start walkin’!”
