The Remodeling Corner

February’s theme is love. For many homeowners, the laundry room is one of the most-used yet least-loved spaces in the house. With a thoughtful remodel, it can become a room that’s efficient, organized, and even enjoyable to spend time in. Whether it needs a refresh or a transformation, here are ways to make it more beautiful.

Start with assessing the needs for your home. Do you want a laundry room sink? Do you want pull-out hampers on wheels? A utility closet for broom, vacuum? Do you need pantry storage? Want a steam closet appliance? Do you need a secondary refrigerator, freezer, or have other food prep equipment that you don’t want cluttering kitchen counters? Do you want it to be a multipurpose room, a place for a hobby or exercise? Perhaps you have a swimming pool and would love easy access to an indoor shower to rinse off, or would like a dog washing station at a comfortable height. What you want included will determine the best layout and flow.

The main event is a water- and energy-efficient washer and dryer. You may want a stacked unit to minimize their space footprint. (LG makes a set in which the dryer controls are on the bottom for ease of use.) You may want them side by side on an elevated platform to make loading and unloading clothes easier on the back with storage underneath. A hanging rod is invaluable for air drying items to reduce wrinkles.

Besides the basics of having countertop space, decorative hardware, water-resistant flooring, and good lighting, there are a range of luxury details to make it special. You may want to enclose the washer and dryer in cabinetry. Add sound dampening in the walls shared with a living space with special drywall and insulation or wainscoting. For interest and texture, you may want to specify a tile backsplash.

With the right design choices, this hardworking space can become one you truly appreciate—proof that even chores are easier in a well-designed home. Make it an attractive space that works for you!
