The Right Reasons

Rover’s Rest Stop Kids wish to share a side to their lives that often goes unseen. Our world right now is especially hard for them. Dr. Karen Becker recently highlighted what Rover’s Kids live every day until rescued. They will all tell you they are blessed to be a Rover’s Kid.

Older dogs are being relinquished in record numbers at a time in their lives when they need us the most. Most have only known a loving family their whole life, and the shelter is a terrifying place that most may never leave. Reasons given for not adopting an older dog include not cute like a puppy, they do not seem playful, may have health issues, recent loss of a pet, and change in owner’s life circumstances. Age should not be a barrier. A Great Dane might be considered senior by age 6, while a Chihuahua may not hit their senior stride until 9 or 10. Like you, they are individuals, and the number does not define them.

The mature dog offers you the chance to find the qualities you are looking for. Whether short or long hair, large or small, health issues or not, cat or child-friendly, or a certain breed, they come with history and a more predictable future than a puppy. You just might be missing out if you pass them by. Please keep an open mind. You never know when love will find you.

Seek out the good rescues that will assist in matching you with your best friend. They should help to transition the pet by providing health care, training, loving support, and socialization to assist in a smooth and loving placement, as well as ongoing support and education for the life of the pet.

You decide the qualities you are looking for, such as breed, size, color, health, training, energy level, and more. The older pets have manners, basic obedience, and life skills. They are focused on pleasing you and will learn new tasks easily. They have a gentleness about them. They are beyond the puppy destroyer stage. They want to spend time with you. They are devoted and form a special bond with the one who now loves them forever. They are thankful and grateful.

They deserve love and kindness as you do. You will be a hero in their eyes and feel a special sense of joy and purpose by opening your heart—guaranteed to make you both feel good.
