Unity: The Twelve Powers

Kay Davis

Unity Church of Sun Lakes is a New Thought community. We gather together to celebrate Peace, Love, Light, and Healing. We practice affirmative prayer, positive thinking, and a healthy lifestyle. We meet in the Arts and Crafts Room at Sun Lakes 1 Country Club at 9:30 a.m. every Sunday. Rev. Jeanne MacLaughlin delivers our lessons live and on YouTube. All are welcome.

The 12 Powers of Man is a book written by Charles Fillmore and was originally published in 1930. Based on the reality of the Divine spark within all people, Charles, one of the founders of Unity, used the disciples of Jesus as the examples of the 12 Powers. This is a metaphysical look at the 12 expressions of the Divine power inherent in each of us. It is a system for soul growth. Our minds can be a link to Spirit through these 12 expressions. At the start of each year, we light a candle for each power, naming the disciple it represents, where it is located in the body, and a designated color. In January it begins with Faith, the disciple is Simon Peter, and the place in the body is centered in the area of the pineal gland. Every month has its power, and this month’s power is Zeal (or enthusiasm) represented by Simon the Canaanite, the zealot in Jesus’s group of 12. Its place in the body stems from the medulla oblongata at the base of the brain. Taken a month at a time, we study each power and learn to use it in our life. The powers are Faith, Strength, Wisdom, Love, Power, Imagination, Understanding, Will, Order, Zeal (or enthusiasm), Elimination, and Life. Holding these qualities in our mind strengthens our ability to use them in our lives.
