On December 2, volunteers helped at a Family Day Event for an Arizona Army National Guard unit that is preparing for deployment out of the country. Approximately 150 soldiers and their families enjoyed the outing at a Scottsdale park. Some soldiers received recognition awards, and the volunteers were introduced. While music played and food was served, many activities, from table games to volleyball to the inflatable bouncing castle, were enjoyed. Prizes were given out. VFW Post 8053 volunteers Angie Freedline (president) and Karen Shaffer helped serve food and, along with three other volunteers, will continue to be connected to the unit offering emotional support to the families of the deployed soldiers.
On December 8, fun was had by all at the VFW Auxiliary Family Freedom Festival held at SLCC. Santa listened to the hopes and wishes of all ages as children decorated holiday cookies, made holiday decorations, colored patriotic pictures and had snacks and goodies!
The Auxiliary continues to provide cakes and soft drinks at the SLCC bingo every Wednesday, sponsored by Post 8053. Funds earned for this weekly event help support veterans and their families.
