VFW Post 8053 Auxiliary news

The Auxiliary thanks the staff at SLCC, with special thanks to Carol White (left) and Krista Weisenbach, for their efforts and support of our Family Freedom Festival in December.

Reservations and tickets will be needed for the March 9 Poppy Ball at Sun Lakes Country Club.

Sun Lakes VFW Post 8053 invites you to help celebrate another outstanding year of service to veterans. The Poppy Ball will featuer a no-host bar on the patio, dinner and listening and dancing to the entertainment of Thaddeus Rose. The Auxiliary will have drawings for raffle baskets. Join us for fun and to help us thank our veterans. Reservations are necessary. Tickets may be purchased from any VFW member and by contacting David/Angie Freedline at 417-894-2677 ([email protected]).

On January 12, Auxiliary 8053 volunteers assisted with the Yellow Ribbon Event for Army National Guard Unit 996 at Wild Horse Pass. There were activities all day to provide information available to the soldiers (while deployed) and their families, such as Community Partners who have services to offer, an information fair and awareness of the Auxiliary volunteers who will be available to the families during the deployment. There were children’s activities and information about upcoming parties for Easter and Halloween and other events.

January 14 was opening day for the 2019 Arizona Legislature Session which will last until April 27. The VFW Auxiliary will provide support to the proposed legislation that will enhance the lives of veterans in Arizona:

A proposed study of the causes of suicide, a proposal to increase the number of State Veteran Benefit Counselors by 20 at a cost of $2.2 million, proposals regarding PTSD, the need for Women Veterans to be more active in proposing legislation and Veterans Courts in Arizona equal to the state with same rules and that they work together.

On Friday, February 15, the National President, Sandy Kriebel, will visit Arizona at VFW Post 720 in Tucson. Sun Lakes Auxiliary members will attend.

February 18 is President’s Day.

The Auxiliary will be promoting the various scholarships that are available to the public. The scholarships and deadlines for applications are: Continuing Education Scholarships, February 15; VFW Auxiliary Merit Scholarship, March 31; Arizona VFW Auxiliary Endowment Grant, March 31 and the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest, March 31. The Auxiliary had a busy and productive 2018 and ended the year with the December 8 Family Freedom Festival with activities for children and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. Santa listened to the wishes of both children and adults and, hopefully, they all came true. We look forward to 2019 as we are involved in District and National VFW events, Arizona legislative proposals and ongoing activities that generate support and funds for our veterans.
