The VFW Auxiliary promotes Americanism, defined as “…an unfailing love of country; loyalty to its institutions and ideas; eagerness to defend it against all enemies; undivided allegiance to the flag; and a desire to secure the blessings of liberty and posterity.”
Several ways Auxiliary Post 8053 supports the Americanism Program is by celebrating America’s patriotic days; providing patriotic materials as part of Flag Education for kids in the 2nd grade class at Mesa Arts Academy and teaches respect and proper care for the U.S. flag.
This month includes November 11, Veterans Day. It is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended WWI. November 11 is celebrated in France as “Armistice Day;” in Britain as “Remembrance Day,” and in Canada as “Remembrance Day.” The common thread through these celebrations is a day to remember all those men and women who were killed during the two world wars and other conflicts. It is a day to thank military veterans for their service. It is also a tribute to our country and our veterans to fly our flags.
This month, Auxiliary Post 8053 is starting a new program in our community with a “Flag Exchange Drive.” When flags become torn and tattered, they need to be respectfully replaced. This program can provide access to new flags and disposal of the old flag for you. If your flag or the flag of a family member, friend, or neighbor needs to be replaced, please call Stephanie Reynolds, President of this Auxiliary, at 503-701-1294.
In addition to Veterans Day, other specific days are November 10, Marine Corps Birthday, and November 28, Thanksgiving Day. November is Military Family Month, honoring the families who provide, or provided, support to our veterans while they serve our country. As you celebrate Thanksgiving, please give a thought of appreciation to those who serve, have served, and their families who support them.
