Weeders enjoy new digs

Pat Bunkley

The Weeders Garden Club kicked off the year in a new meeting location. The larger space encouraged members and guests to mingle, renew friendships and share their summer gardening and travel adventures while enjoying refreshments.

The September program featured a workshop to create seed boxes for our garden boutique at the Chandler Farmer’s Market in December. Cauleen Autery and the ways and means committee members have planned an exciting array of items to sell including china tea cup bird feeders, silver plant markers and decorated flower pots. The monthly raffle was won by Pattie Langton. These fundraising activities support the club’s charitable projects.

Pam Perry will present the October 9 program on raised bed vegetable gardening. Pam is a Master Gardener, Director of the demonstration gardens at the Maricopa County Extension Center, President of the Arizona Herb Association and a well-known teacher, author and speaker.

Members are looking forward to a field trip to Wallace Gardens in Scottsdale followed by lunch at Isabella’s later in October.

Vice president Pat Murrish introduced the program and field trip plans for the year. Program topics include attracting monarch butterflies, gardening in containers, creating bonsai trees and growing orchids.

Weeders meet the second Thursday of the month, September through May. Refreshments begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by the program and meeting at 10:00 a.m. in the Navajo Room, Sun Lakes Country Club, 25601 N Sun Lakes Blvd., Sun Lakes.

Guests are welcome to attend a meeting but field trips are reserved for members. Each meeting features an interesting program and horticulture presentation. Weeders Garden Club is a member of the Arizona Federation of Garden Clubs. Our members come from Sun Lakes, Chandler, Gilbert, Queen Creek and San Tan Valley.
