Weeders Garden Club had a very interesting speaker for their monthly meeting on October 13. Dr. Casey Johnston is a chiropractor as well as the clinical director of Desert Springs Chiropractic. Johnston has always had an interest in promoting health, well-being and safety of all who actively garden. His talk was very informative and he was able to give some good tips on the what to do’s of body health and gardening.
We had a follow up field trip to Mesa Community College Rose Garden and a chance to view more of the 9,000 plus rose bushes planted in the western section of the garden. Mary Lou Coffman, Rose Garden Curator, Master Rosarian and Rose Judge, led the tour. So many amazing colors of roses grow here in our Valley desert!
Our annual Weeders Garage Sale Fundraiser is scheduled for Friday, November 4 and Saturday, November 5 from 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. each day at 864 Beechnut Drive in Chandler. This is our principal fundraiser for the Garden Club each year and we will be looking for a fantastic turn out as usual. Please come and shop early for some incredible treasures.
Garden therapy is one of the events in which our Weeders’ members participate at a local assisted living facility in Chandler. We help residents make floral arrangements twice a year (November and March) to enjoy and we probably get as much joy out of this sharing. We may be able to expand to a second assisted living facility this year.
A field trip on December 1 is scheduled to visit the Arid Tree Zone Nursery in Mesa, AZ. This wholesale nursery is the primary grower of native trees in the Southwest. We also will have lunch at a local restaurant after the tour of the nursery.
The Weeders Garden Club meets the second Thursday of each month, September through May, in the Navajo Room at Sun Lakes Country Club in Sun Lakes. Treats and coffee are served beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the business meeting is from 10:00 a.m.-noon. There is an interesting speaker and a horticulture presentation each meeting as well as a club money-making raffle, too!
Membership is open to everyone. Although field trips are reserved for members, anyone interested in attending a meeting is welcome.
