Many Arizona voters know little about the Arizona Corporation Commission, but the decisions made by its five elected members directly affect utility rates, energy policy, and other issues that impact residents across the state.
With two Commission seats on the Nov. ballot, the Sun Lakes Democratic Club (SLDC) will host Democratic candidates Clara Pratte and Jonathon Hill at its Monday, Sept. 14 meeting. The event begins with a social gathering at 6:30 p.m., followed by the meeting at 7 p.m. in the Navajo Room at Sun Lakes Country Club, 25601 E. Sun Lakes Blvd. N.
The timing is especially relevant for Sun Lakes residents as JW Water is seeking a rate increase from the Arizona Corporation Commission following its purchase of Pima Utility Company. Pratte and Hill will discuss their qualifications for office, explain the Commission’s responsibilities, and share their perspectives on issues including utility regulation and clean energy policies.
Also appearing will be Brian Matlock, Democratic candidate for Arizona State Mine Inspector. The Mine Inspector is elected to a four-year term and oversees approximately 500 active mines and more than 100,000 abandoned mine sites throughout Arizona. A mechanical engineer, Matlock will discuss how his professional background has prepared him to promote safe mining operations while supporting one of Arizona’s largest industries.
The meeting will also feature Democratic candidates from Legislative District 13, including Senate candidate Kristie O’Brien, an attorney, mediator, and mother, along with House candidates Dr. Racquel “Rockee” Armstrong, an Arizona State University educator, and Jacob Weinberg, a military veteran and business auditor. Additional candidates seeking office in the Nov. 3 election may also attend.
The Sun Lakes Democratic Club represents more than 2,500 registered Democrats in Sun Lakes and advocates for an Arizona that works for everyone. In addition to its monthly meeting, SLDC members and those interested in joining are also invited to attend the club’s First Friday Coffee at 10 a.m. on the first Friday of each month at Denny’s, 4977 S. Arizona Ave. in Chandler. It’s a great opportunity to meet neighbors and discuss current issues in an informal setting.
In support of the community, the club continues its partnership with Matthew’s Crossing Food Bank. Attendees are encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable food items to the meeting or contribute online. Donors may request a receipt for the dollar-for-dollar Arizona charitable tax credit.
