Breathe easy with Tai Chi

Kim Kubsch

Why is Tai Chi and Qigong beneficial to practice deep breathing exercises? The moving meditation of Tai Chi is a form of relaxation; and therefore, when practiced regularly, it often leads to the relief or prevention of symptoms commonly associated with stress, which may include high blood pressure, headaches, stomach conditions, depression, anxiety, and other physical challenges.

To raise awareness of lung health, Breathe Easy Week is June 16-22. How many times do you breathe each day? The average person takes 23,000 breaths each day. Most modern adults breathe much faster like puppies – about 15-20 breaths per minute; 12 breaths per minute is the resting respiratory rate and 5-6 breaths per minute for Ta Chi and Qigong breathing.

During my easy and gentle moving meditation classes of Tai Chi-Qigong, we put a huge smile on our lungs and shift from fast, shallow breathing to deep, abdominal breathing. The breath is the key to letting your movements become slower and more effortless. It also oxygenates your cells and cleanses toxins from the body.
