The Sun Lakes Camera Club (SLCC) will hold its first meeting of the 2024-25 season at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Lecture Hall of Cottonwood Country Club. General membership meetings at which educational presentations on photographic topics of interest are given are held on the second Thursday of each month, while the fourth Thursday meetings are devoted to club photo competitions in which club members submit photos in various categories that are viewed and judged by an outside panel of judges.

The presentation on Oct. 10 will be an explanation and demonstration of PhotoPills. This inexpensive but very powerful application has been universally praised by photographers as the ultimate photography planning app. The Photopills app is incredibly rich in features and provides a large number of tools by which photographers can plan their photos in advance without actually being at the location. Its two AR (Augmented Reality) features are mind-blowing tools that allow the user to see the exact position of the sun, moon, or Milky Way at any given time on any given date in relation to any planned shooting location on Earth.

The three categories for our photo competition on Oct. 24 will be Open, Flowers, and Water. Members may submit up to four photos in either print or digital format, and submissions are judged at three different levels: A, B, and C, representing levels of photographic experience. Members who elect not to compete are able to gain valuable insights as observers being exposed to the work of fellow photographers whose photos are being evaluated. Both observers and competing members draw inspiration from viewing a wide variety of work in various photographic genres presented by fellow members. For those who wish to go beyond the club competitions, there are opportunities to enter inter-club and international competitions as well.

For some time there has existed a misconception concerning SLCC that its membership is limited to residents of the Sun Lakes community. This is not the case, as SLCC welcomes members from any geographical area, and all of our meetings are open to visitors who may simply be interested in finding out about the club. No photographic experience is necessary, and our membership is comprised of all levels of skills, ranging from casual photo snappers to seasoned photographers.

The Sun Lakes Camera Club meets on the second and fourth Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall of the Cottonwood Country Club from October through April.
