Free health programs offered

Whether you are caring for a parent or a spouse, success as a caregiver comes as much from a certain mindset as it does from effective techniques. Emotions such as frustration, anger, embarrassment, exhaustion and guilt are the most common areas that caregivers struggle with. This program will share 11 strategies that will help you to establish attainable goals, find appropriate focus for your unique situation and direct you to meaningful and pertinent strategies for success.

The speaker will be Elaine Poker-Yount, Community Liaison, Visiting Angels East Valley. Ms. Poker-Yount writes a column for the Arizona Republic called, Sandwich Generation, which focuses on tips for family caregivers.

This free program is on Tuesday, January 12 at 11:00 a.m. and includes lunch; the program will conclude at 1:30 p.m. It will be held at Sun Lakes United Methodist Church, Lindsay Hall, 9248 E. Riggs Road, Sun Lakes. Please RSVP to 480-634-4191.

Diabetes – What is it?

This free program will discuss what diabetes is and what the risk factors are for it. Monitoring of blood sugar, cholesterol and hypoglycemia, as well as foot care, eye exams and complications will be discussed.

The presenter is Mary Ingram, RN, a Certified Diabetes Educator who has worked with people with diabetes for 30 years. She is a faith community nurse at St. Mary-Basha Catholic Church in Chandler.

The program is on Wednesday, January 27 at 9:00 a.m. and will last about one hour. It will be held at Sun Lakes United Methodist Church, Room Four of the Education Building, 9248 E. Riggs Road, Sun Lakes. Please RSVP to the parish nurse at 480-895-8766.
