National Day of Prayer

Mayor Kevin Hartke

The Chandler Mayor, Kevin Hartke, will be the guest speaker for the National Day of Prayer at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2019. The event will be held at the SunBird Golf Resort, 6250 S. SunBird Blvd., Chandler. The event is open to the public and they are cordially invited to attend.

Mayor Hartke is known for his passion for all things Chandler and Arizona. He has led National Day of Prayer initiatives, East Valley Mayors’ Prayer Breakfasts and will be the Master of Ceremonies of the 2019 Governor’s Prayer Breakfast in April.

During the past nine years prior to becoming mayor, Kevin Hartke served as Chandler Council member and twice elected as vice mayor. Also, nine years ago, he started the non-profit “For Our City – Chandler,” addressing homelessness, back to school drives and many other causes. Currently, 100 faith communities and non-profits work together on initiatives and causes under the banner of “For Our City – Chandler.” Mayor Hartke serves regionally on three transportation boards, an economic board and three county or statewide leadership oversight boards.

The theme for this National Day of Prayer is Love One Another. There will be individuals from the community representing various ethnic groups to participate in scriptures and prayers. Others to participate will include those from our military, our government, our schools, our business, our churches and our families.

It will be a very patriotic day of music as well. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Band will provide the preprogram music of military and patriotic songs beginning at 9:30 a.m. The morning event will also include vocal ensembles and soloists and instrumentalists, along with audience participation in singing patriotic songs.

The importance of prayer has been a part of our country since its beginning. In 1775, the Continental Congress called for a day of Fasting and Prayer. President Lincoln declared a National Day of Prayer and Fasting in 1863. Then in 1983, the first National Day of Prayer Observance was held in Constitution Hall. President Regan set aside a designated day for national prayer in 1987. The following year, he designated the first Thursday in May as the annual observance for the National Day of Prayer.

The public is cordially invited to attend, so invite your neighbors and friends to join you in attending this National Day of Payer FREE event. The SunBird Golf Resort is on the south side of Riggs Road between McQueen and Cooper Roads.
