News From Your Neighbors – Neighbors Who Care, Inc

Jennifer Gustafson, Community Outreach Manager

We love to celebrate Mother’s and Father’s Days with special meals, thoughtful gifts and sentimental greeting cards. Whether we’re near or far from our parents or those who are like parents to us, these holidays give us the chance to let our loved ones know how much we care. But, is one day a year enough to honor those who have given so much to us?

At Neighbors Who Care, we have the privilege of serving mothers and fathers year-round who want to maintain their independence and remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Through a variety of free services, we care for hundreds in our community who are struggling with health issues, disabilities and other challenges that come with advanced age. In many cases, they have nowhere else to turn to for help.

But NWC volunteers are more than just rides to the doctor or deliverers of meals. They are lifelines for those who might otherwise have to move to an assisted living facility that they cannot afford. They are Good Samaritans who can change lightbulbs and write checks. They are like surrogate family members who share stories, hugs and an empathetic ear.

As we honor the mothers and fathers in our lives this year, we invite you to consider how you can help others in our area. It takes many volunteers to meet the needs of 600+ homebound seniors. And let me tell you, it’s really tough to tell an 85-year-old great-grandmother that no one is available to take her to her chemotherapy appointment.
