The Oakwood Lady Niners is a friendly, supportive group of women who enjoy playing nine holes of golf on Tuesday mornings and socializing together afterwards at lunch in the Poolside Grill or at league luncheons held about five times a year. We welcome golfers of all abilities, including novices, who want to learn etiquette and rules from more experienced players. Those who want a shorter game can play in our GEMS division, teeing off from the 150-yard marker.

After its very successful Member/Guest Day on March 8, the OLNGA was delighted to be able to donate $1,500 to the Hamilton High School Girls’ Golf Team in Chandler. Event co-chairs Margaret Johns and Sharon Gale presented a check to golf coach Jeff Kain, who reported the girls were especially grateful for the donation because it will help defray the costs of a team trip to Florida.

A significant portion of the donation was raised by raffling beautiful gift baskets prepared and donated by Tuny O’Rourke, Marcy Griffith, Sharon Gale, Linda Trisch, Leslie Pettis, Pat Stead, Margaret Johns, Cora Lathom-Levsky, Phyllis Madison, Georgeann Bell, Suevonne Negaard, Anne Carlson, Rachel Enloe, Helen Semple, Denise Fleshner,, Kay Blas, Penny Quinn, Bea Cannon, Reggie Wegman, Kathy Chebuhar, Carol Pontek, Sally Spangler, Cedar Waxwing Ladies and the Ironwood and Oakwood Pro Shops.

Lady Niners had another busy week after the Member/Guest day. On March 15 there was informal, unpaired play. On March 17, we played the back nine at Cottonwood as guests of the Cottonwood Lady Niners. Fortunately, the pain of losing balls in the lake on the 18th hole was assuaged by the warm hospitality the Cottonwood golfers showed us after the game.

The March 22 low net game on the Lakes was the third game in the Jo Williams Championship series. Winners were – Flight 1: 1st Phyllis Madison, 2nd Cora Lathom-Levensky, 3rd Helen Semple; Flight 2: 1st Sandy Krediet, 2nd Fran Neumayr, 3rd Kathy Chebuhar; Flight 3: 1st Margaret Johns, 2nd Sharon Gale, 3rd Ann Rounthwait.

March 29 brought another low net game, this time on the Sonoran, the fourth in the State Medallion series. Flight 1: 1st Helen Semple, 2nd Phyllis Madison and Cora Lathom-Levensky, 3rd Joyce Parker; Flight 2: 1st Kathy Chebuhar, 2nd Deborah Greenwood, 3rd Debra Burns and Linda Trisch; Flight 3: 1st Karen Kenyon, 2nd Barbara Stewart, Julia Collier and Annette Carrington.

On April 5 it was a low gross game, the fourth in the Club Championship series. Flight 1: 1st Joyce Parker, 2nd Nancy Heberling, 3rd Cora Lathom-Levensky; Flight 2: 1st Sandy Krediet, 2nd Deb Burns, 3rd Judy Hedding and Patty Partridge; Flight 3: 1st Marcy Griffith, 2nd Barbara Stewart, 3rd Margaret Johns.

The OLNGA will begin its summer season May 1, with informal play at 7:00 a.m. Sign up each week at the Pro Shop. It’s a good time to join the league and get to know other members while golfing and having breakfast at the Poolside Grill afterwards. For more information about the league call Margaret Johns  at 480-588-1807.
