Restless Minds topic: Are you patriotic?

Bill Gates

Are you patriotic? Most Americans would answer with an unqualified “Yes!”

But what makes you patriotic? And who decides?

These and other questions about love of country will be explored when the Restless Minds discussion group begins its 2016-17 year on Tuesday, September 13.

Restless Minds discussions are open to all people with inquisitive minds. There are no dues or membership requirements. Just show up and participate. The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month, September through May.

The September 13 gathering will be held from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Sewing Room of Oakwood’s Arts and Crafts Center.

Some of the questions discussion leader Bill Gates expects to raise include:

Are there differences in the way our generation expresses and regards patriotism from the way our children and grandchildren do?

How important are symbols, such as flying the flag or wearing a flag pin, in indicating love of country?

Are you unpatriotic if you don’t vote?

What, if any, measures should schools do to promote patriotism and civic literacy?

Are some states more patriotic than others?
