SLCT slates “Southern Hospitality”

Andrea Hummel

Sun Lakes Community Theatre’s spring show is scheduled for performance dates of March 10-14. Auditions will be held December 13 at 1:30 p.m. in Cottonwood, location to be determined.

The spring play, Southern Hospitality, directed by Howard Hummel, has a cast of five men and eight women. Southern Hospitality was written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, playwrights perhaps best known for The Dixie Swim Club. They also wrote for Golden Girls and Designing Women.

“This hilarious play boasts a large cast full of very quirky characters. This high comedy is one of my favorite types to direct,” commented Hummel.

The story begins when the little town of Fayro, Texas is in trouble! Ever since the Super SmartMart and the rendering plant have closed, people have been moving away from the beloved hometown of the Futrelle sisters.

How to save it? Throw a Fayro Days celebration that includes a craft show, a beauty pageant and a huge Civil War battle reenactment to try to lure new business to the town.

Meanwhile, Deputy John Curtis and Twink are planning a wedding, the preacher has gambled away his mobile home and Dub is going through a mid-life crisis. It’s all part of the laugh-out-loud farce that takes you back to a simpler time – and some pretty simple people!

“I’m also looking for people interested in set design and construction,” added Hummel. “There are jobs for people with a broad range of abilities, from sewing costumes to painting walls. If you want to have a great time with some marvelous people, get involved!”

Sun Lakes Community Theatre’s next meeting is October 9 at the Cottonwood Ballroom. Join us for cocktails at 6:00 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. meeting to follow. All are welcome!
