Sun Lakes Aero Club Done Until January 1, 2021

Many of you know that I used to share ownership of a Grumman Yankee AA-1 N5961L with member John Philp before selling my share to him a couple years ago. He, in turn, sold the plane to a man from California. I discovered the new owner had relocated to Port Townsend, Wash. On a recent trip around the Olympic Peninsula with my wife, we located the plane at Port Townsend. I took this photo and just had to share it with you. Wish I still had the plane. Founding member Al Galvi always urged me to make sure there was a photo of an airplane in every issue of the Splash.

Hey, Sun Lakes Aero Club members and other Sun Lakers interested in any aspect of aviation: The sky is still blue, the weather is finally cooling off, the COVID-19 virus seems to be abating, and we’re hoping to get the club up and running soon.

But for now, because of the virus, we have decided to cancel all club activities through the remainder of 2020. You will recall our March and April 2020 gatherings were scrubbed due to restrictions resulting from the virus. The speaker for our Nov. 16 gathering, aircraft historian Mike Lavelle, is in no hurry to return to Sun Lakes from his home in Washington State. Also canceled will be the Dec. 21 presentation on clandestine operations during the Vietnam War by Robert Denison. We will attempt to reschedule both presentations in the future.

The talk by member Don Palmer on why the U.S. was so far behind the USSR in the race to the moon is still on for Jan. 18, assuming the COVID-19 virus clears up by then. We are still working on speakers for February, March, and April. Any volunteers?

The Sun Lakes Aero Club is an official Sun Lakes organization made up of pilots, former pilots, and others interested in any aspect of aviation. The club has monthly gatherings November through April featuring speakers on a wide variety of aviation-related topics.
