On April 20, the Auxiliary sponsored activities and provided volunteers for the SLCC Easter Egg Hunt as part of the Auxiliary Family Freedom Festival. There was a great turnout.

On May 20, the 2019-2020 officers for both the Post and the Auxiliary of VFW 8053 were installed.

Members of the Post and Auxiliary volunteered May 25 at several Chandler locations to provide Buddy Poppies to the public. The remembrance poppy has been used since 1921 to commemorate military personnel of the U.S. and our allies who have died in war. It represents the common field poppy that was inspired by the poem about World War I, “In the Field of Flanders.” They were adopted by the VFW to live up to its motto, “to honor the dead by helping the living.” Donations help support veterans, their families and the VFW National Home for Orphans and Widows of our veterans.

Memorial Day, May 27, was celebrated at Sun Lakes Country Club Veterans Pavilion. This year, the event was sponsored by the Daughters of the Revolution. Treats and beverages were provided after the ceremony honoring veterans from all branches of the U.S. Military in the Navajo Room of SLCC.

VFW Post 8053 Auxiliary will no longer sell and serve refreshments at Wednesday night Bingo at SLCC. Ruth Mayer originally started this project and headed the program until 2010. Since then, it has continued with volunteers from the Auxiliary and non-members providing and serving the cakes and beverages. Since November of 2018, Carol Veenhuis provided the lemonade and iced tea, and Carol, Christa Marshall, Dorothy Meek and Philomena Herring have been an ad-hoc committee coordinating food and volunteers. Many thanks to all the members and non-members who made this service possible.
