As the Oakwood Lady Niners begin their winter golf season on Tuesday, November 8, it’s the perfect time to join the league – a group of friendly, supportive women who play nine holes on one of Oakwood’s three courses every Tuesday morning.

The Oakwood Lady Niners Golf Association (OLNGA) offers something for everyone. You can be as competitive or non-competitive as you like. Novice golfers are welcome and it’s a great way to learn golf etiquette and rules without pressure. But more experienced golfers enjoy competing for Pro Shop credits awarded every week, and for club championship honors and the chance to compete in the Arizona Women’s Golf Association State Medallion Tournament. Because prizes are awarded in each of three handicap levels, not only the best golfers, but also we less proficient golfers with high handicaps are rewarded when we have a good game.

In addition to providing an enjoyable golf game every Tuesday morning, the OLNGA offers a great opportunity to make lasting friendships. Members regularly have lunch together after golf. Everyone is invited and made welcome. There are also several luncheons during the year, organized by the social chair.

But don’t just take it from me. Here’s what Lady Niners have to say about the league:

Colleen Duke: “The Lady Niners is a group of friendly ladies who welcome you as a golf partner no matter what your handicap.”

Penny Quinn: “Even though I am now an “associate” member of the Niners many of them are still my life-long friends from way back in the ‘90s!”

Annette Carrington: “Such a fun group! No one cares how good you are – just smile and hit the ball! Great group!”

Reggie Wegman: “I have been a member for 15 years. What a group of fabulous women! They have supported me in times of great sadness and I love them all. Join us if you are a kind, caring, interested woman and oh yes, even if you like to play golf!”

Tuny O’Rourke: “Besides enjoying the nine holes of golf on Tuesdays, I look forward to seeing the many good friends I’ve made in our league. Meeting for lunch afterwards enables us to get to know each other better and, of course, share the highs and lows on the course, with lots of laughs.”

Pattie Wigton: “OLNGA is a wonderful way to meet new people while learning about the game of golf, regardless of how good or not so good you are. Everyone is so very friendly and we all enjoy meeting new friends to spend some quality time with! Please come join us! We are waiting for you with open arms!”

You don’t have to live in Oakwood to join. For more information about the league see our website at http://oakwoodladyniners.wixsite.com/olnga or call Margaret Johns at 480-588-1807.

Dates to note: On October 7 our most senior member, Jo Williams, turns 98. Jo played golf in our GEMS division, teeing off from the 150 yard marker, until last year. Our Welcome Back luncheon will be November 8. Save the date!
