Creative writers of all kinds — fiction, nonfiction, memoir — will be able to participate in a college-level writing workshop running during October, November and December.
The workshop will meet from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Thursdays, October 13, 20 and 27, November 10 and 17 and December 1 in the Sun Lakes Country Club Friendship Room. Cost, which includes six two-hour workshop sessions, is $70. Enroll at AnnLeeMiller.com/classes or call 480-735-1950.
The workshop will be facilitated by local author Ann Lee Miller who holds a BA in creative writing and is working on a Master of Fine Arts in the field. Over 100,000 copies of Miller’s novels have been downloaded from Amazon. She is also writing a memoir about growing up on a sailboat.
Sun Lakes resident Jeff Smith, who attended last spring’s workshop, said, “This was my first writing class ever and I appreciated Ann’s setting the stage for a positive experience!” Another resident, retired librarian Llynne Reed said, “I hosted a lunch for nine family members on the day of our workshop. I told everyone that I would be leaving to go to my writing class!”
Writing time will be interspersed with spunky mini-lectures and feedback on participants’ work. Areas of focus will be structuring fiction and nonfiction, characterization, setting, dialogue, tension and scene-writing. Participants will also be introduced to novel writing strategies such as showing and telling that can increase the chances of getting written work published. Professional editor Helen Wakefield will give free edits of class members’ writing. Weekly handouts and publishing tips will also be provided.
The workshop was also well-received at nearby Snedigar Recreation Center, Power Ranch in Gilbert, and Queen Creek Library as well as Towerpoint RV Resort in Mesa.
Sneak peeks of Miller’s memoir from her childhood in Florida appear on her blog each Friday at AnnLeeMiller.com. More information about the workshop can be found at AnnLeeMiller.com/classes.
