Guess who’s coming to town? Right now depending upon your age and your circumstances there are several reactions.
Children squeal with delight and start singing about a guy in a red suit who has been keeping a close eye on their behavior. They of course are convinced that they have been nothing less than angelic over the past 12 months. Therefore they have no problem with him checking his database twice because they are sure to find something fantastic on Christmas morning!
Older children will be equally excited about who is coming to town because that means grandma and grandpa are going to spend the holidays with them. They look forward to being the center of attention, trips to the mall, and an outing to Zoo lights! If it’s not the grandparents then it is uncles and aunts and that means …cousins! Now they dream of staying up late, giggling fits, and all kinds of fun.
Finally there are those who would answer the question with a sigh; “Who’s coming to town? No one, no one at all.” They will be alone this Christmas and they are anxiously waiting for it all to be over.
Who’s coming to town? Well about two thousand years ago if you had asked that question in Bethlehem they wouldn’t know how to answer. Today, however, we do know. The Son of God came to town. He was born to Mary with Joseph by her side. Jesus had been watching to see who had been naughty and who had been nice and the scale tipped one sided on the naughty side. He came not to put lumps of coal in the stockings of the naughty, but to one day shed drops of blood on a cross so that all people, young and old, would be forgiven.
He came to let us know that we are the center of attention of our Heavenly Father who wants to lavish us with love.
He came to bring laughter and joy to our hearts and peace to our troubled minds.
He came to let us know that we are never alone because He is always with us.
Who is coming to town? All different answers, but one that I hope and pray is true for all of you is that Jesus is coming to town; that this Christmas Jesus will be in your hearts and homes.
“And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:9-11)
Merry Christmas!
