Republican Club September 12 meeting

Carolyn McCorkle

The Sun Lakes Republican Club will feature “Litigating for Liberty” with special speaker Christina Sandefur, Executive Vice President of the Goldwater Institute, at its regular meeting on Tuesday, September 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the Arizona Room of the Sun Lakes Country Club, 25601 N. Sun Lakes Blvd., Sun Lakes, AZ 85248. The public is invited. Christina develops policies and litigates cases advancing healthcare freedom, free enterprise, private property rights, free speech and taxpayer rights.

Christina has won important victories for property rights in Arizona and works nationally to promote the Institute’s Private Property Rights Protection Act, a state-level reform that requires government to pay owners when regulations destroy property rights and reduce property values. She is also a co-drafter of the Right to Try initiative, now law in over half of the states, which protects terminally ill patients’ right to try safe investigational treatments that have been prescribed by their physician but are not yet FDA approved for market.

Christina is the co-author of the book Cornerstone of Liberty: Private Property Rights in 21st Century America (2016). She is a frequent guest on national television and radio programs, including Fox Business’s Stossel, The Dick Morris Show and the Armstrong and Getty Show. Her litigation and policy work has been featured in National Review, The Washington Post, Human Events, The American Spectator and The Weekly Standard, among others. She has provided expert legal testimony to various legislative committees and is a frequent speaker at conferences. Ms. Sandefur is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Law and Hillsdale College.

The Goldwater Institute is a non-profit, conservative and libertarian public policy think-tank based in Phoenix. The Institute’s stated mission is “to defend and strengthen the freedom guaranteed to all Americans in the constitutions of the United States and all 50 states.” Founded in 1988 with the support of former U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater, the Institute was primarily a public policy research organization until 2007, when it added a litigation arm, becoming the first state-based policy organization to do so.

Goldwater’s litigation arm, the Scharf-Norton Center for Constitutional Litigation, was previously directed by attorney Clint Bolick and engages in lawsuits against federal, state and local governmental entities across the United States to protect individual rights from potential government intrusion. The Goldwater Institute is a proponent of increased educational choice through charter schools and school vouchers.

The current director of the Center is Vice President Timothy Sandefur, who joined Goldwater when Bolick was selected by Governor Ducey to join the Arizona Supreme Court. Victor Riches was named president and CEO of The Goldwater Institute on July 10, 2017, following the tenure of Darcy A. Olsen. The board of directors includes Barry Goldwater, Jr.
