Unity: peace happens in small steps

Unity Church of Sun Lakes is a community seeking a deeper, spiritual way of living through affirmative prayer, meditation, healthful lifestyle and activities that promote education, friendship, fun and service. We follow the teachings of Jesus as well as other masters of love and wisdom. We invite you to attend our Sunday Celebration at 9:30 a.m. at the Arts and Crafts Room at Sun Lakes Country Club, located a long block south of Riggs on Sun Lakes Blvd. in the furthest building south of the club. Our minister is Rev. Debbi Brown Adams, and Francine Alexander is our music and choir director. We welcome all visitors and hope you will stay for coffee and visit with us following the service.

What is the Season for Non-Violence? In 1998, Arun Gandhi, the fifth grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, established the Season for Non-Violence. It is a yearly event to celebrate the philosophies and lives of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. Today, Arun chairs the Season with Rev. Michael Bernard Beckwith of the Agape International Spiritual Center, and it is convened by the Association of Global New Thought. It begins with the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination on January 30, and ends with the anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., on April 4. Non-violence is an active form of resistance. Gandhi’s vision of non-violence is translated as “clinging to truth.” He believed in the determination to speak out, even when one’s truth is unpopular. He also believed in the willingness to hear the truth of other people’s experience. Two other components are refusal to harm others and the willingness to suffer for one’s beliefs. Undoing the violence within us involves challenging the myths that we are not good enough, smart enough or skilled enough to act. To gain confidence, it is suggested we work with small groups and do role playing. As our resourcefulness grows, we become more able to support each other in maintaining our non-violent actions. Non-violence is the constant awareness of the dignity and humanity of oneself and others. It is a courageous acceptance of active love and good will as the instrument with which to overcome darkness and injustice. As we weave together the diversity of individual experiences into an ever-changing vision, we heal the world in small steps. At Unity, we believe God lives in the hearts of all people and that Peace is possible.
