Period Poverty describes the struggle many low-income women and girls face while trying to afford menstrual products, due to the financial burden of menstrual supplies. The stigma that shrouds periods further prevents young girls and women from talking about it, which can have emotional, physical, and mental health effects on individuals. Without access to menstrual products, girls can miss school or be embarrassed and humiliated at school.
The Southeast Valley Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women), in collaboration with Girl Scouts from the West Chandler Neighborhood, conducted a very successful public service project that benefits Title 1 elementary and junior high school girls in Chandler. Fifty volunteers assembled over 360 period packs containing over 10,000 items to combat Period Poverty! These period packs will be made available free of charge for girls who need them. AAUW supports equity for women and girls in society, and we are privileged to have collaborated on this important project.
AAUW is a national organization dedicated to advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, philanthropy, and research. There are more than 170,000 members across 1,000 local branches. The Southeast Valley Branch of AAUW, which serves Chandler, Gilbert, and Sun Lakes, was chartered in 1989.
