Aero Club to Hear About Story of WWII Bomber

The recovery and restoration of a World War II Royal Canadian Air Force Halifax bomber that crashed into the Baltic Sea will be the topic of a presentation to the Sun Lakes Aero Club gathering on Monday, Dec. 21, at the Sun Lakes Country Club Navajo Room.

The event will begin with coffee and camaraderie at 6:30 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

The speaker will be Aero Club member Warren Wallace whose several previous appearances before the group have been extremely well received.

In 1943 the Halifax bomber with a crew of seven was on a bombing mission when it was struck by lightning. The pilot headed toward safety in Sweden. Running on only two of its four engines, the crew bailed out of the bomber, and it kept flying over the Baltic Sea before crashing into the water.

A Swedish diving team stumbled across the wreckage a few years ago, and the recovery was put into motion.

The Sun Lakes Aero Club sponsors programs the third Monday of each month, November through April, at the Sun Lakes Country Club.
