Dr. Peter Sutton, a local chiropractor, spoke to us at our November meeting. He talked about how sewists very commonly have back, neck, and shoulder issues. We all do so much looking down these days, whether looking at our phone, tablets, or sewing machines, that we need to be aware of taking breaks and doing some simple exercises to avoid soreness. Dr. Sutton was accompanied by two massage therapists who provided a five- or six-minute massage to any member who requested one. Many members (including me) took them up on their offer. I was very pleased with the result and actually was ready for a nap afterwards!
Our December get-together will be our Holiday Luncheon. Always a popular event, members can reserve their spot by contacting Judy Waltz at 480-622-0711 by Dec. 6. We will have entertainment by the Chordairs, a favor for each attendee, and, as always, good food and great camaraderie. The luncheon meeting is Dec. 13 and will start at noon. The cost is $15.
Our stash table overflowed this month. After adopting many items, the rest will be taken to the Assistance League for resale or donation. Sew-N-Sews members do a great deal of recycling. Cottons and fiberfill and batting is used by Pads4Paws in the pet beds, and Children’s Charities uses small fabrics that are suitable for doll clothes. We also use leftover quilting fabrics for baby quilts and many other useful items. We will not have a stash table in December.
We have a new Special Interest Group called Garment Gusto. This new group is for members who want to focus on sewing clothing. We will share tips and techniques and help each other through the process of pattern and fabric selection, as well as fitting and learning new skills. Led by Kathy Libby and Jeanie Sanders, this group will meet on the second Thursday each month at 1 p.m.
Renewal dues for 2024 are due by Dec. 31. A renewal form is included in the monthly newsletter. You may bring your check for $15 and the completed renewal form to the next meeting or mail it to the address on the renewal form. Fifteen dollars is a real bargain these days for all the fun and sharing enjoyed by all Sew-N-Sews members.
Guests are welcome to join us for two meetings before joining. The new-member fee is $25, which includes a name badge. Membership is open to all Sun Lakes residents. We meet the second Wednesday of each month in the Navajo Room at Sun Lakes Country Club, at 1 p.m.
Our meeting in January will be held on Jan. 10, 2024. Our topic will be “All Things Felted,” by Brenda from Tempe Yarn and Fiber. We invite you to come and join us.
