Mixed media painting by artist Marilyn Conner
Sue Sindelar
Welcoming August here is Sun Lakes can mean many different things to each of us. One thing for sure is that the summer heat is now half over! Some of us might be thinking that it’s time to “get out of the Valley” for needed relief. Others might be enjoying inside time reading, crafting, painting, sewing, watching favorite movies, or catching up on unfinished projects. Either way, there are often things that get put off to be finished at a later time, just as the featured painting this month. It was left unfinished for years and then finally came alive and was completed. It is also a reminder that there is always rebirth after a nature fire as in the Yosemite Fire of 1990 painting by Marilyn Conner. Sometimes we just need to trust and see that what is beyond the half-finished art form just might become a beautiful new image we can love and enjoy. At the very least, we can say, “I finished it.” We all have unfinished art projects that could be resurrected. So, if you don’t know what you feel like painting this week, bring one of your unfinished art pieces and see if you can be inspired to allow it to come to life. You just might surprise yourself.
The Desert Artists Club meets year round each Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Ceramics Room (A-8) in Cottonwood. We come together to be with other artists and create in our own mediums, which are watercolor, oil, acrylic, charcoal, colored pencils, paint by number, pen and ink, drawing, and mixed media, to name a few. We are a casual club with no dues or regular meetings. We have occasional yummy social times and Share Your Art gatherings. This club has been together for over two decades. It is fun to get together and be inspired by each other’s talents, whether you are a beginner or an advanced artist. Some members have taught art or are professional artists, but we all enjoy being with others who love and appreciate art. There is no judgment, only support and fun.
If you live in any of the three HOAs of Sun Lakes, you are eligible to join. Feel free to come and check out our group any Tuesday between 3:30 and 5 p.m. for the best time. Our club might be just what will keep you going during this summer’s heat spell—something fun to inspire you to beat the heat and get out of the house.
