Spencer Roberts and his wife Nancy
Although our HOA does a great job with our tennis courts, many people, including Cottonwood Tennis Club (CTC) members, don’t realize that we have a crew of volunteers who provide additional services to keep them up and running. Everything is in great shape. It really takes a village.
Spencer Roberts is one of those exceptional volunteers. He has been maintaining Cottonwood’s tennis and pickleball court windscreens since 2016. He took the job over after Don Neu was tragically killed in a biking accident. With our Arizona monsoons, harsh sun, and frequent winds, he has job security ensuring the windscreens stay secure.
Spencer credits the Tennis Club for his family’s easy integration into the Cottonwood Palo Verde community. Cottonwood Tennis Club is as much of a social club as it is a tennis club. CTC has events for all skill levels that emphasize social interaction, competitive tournaments, weekly leagues, and holiday parties. In fact, 13 years later, Spencer attributes his involvement in tennis as the starting point for almost every aspect of his life in Sun Lakes. Consequently, taking care of the windscreens seems like a small gesture for everything the tennis community has done for him. Spencer has held several leadership roles in the Cottonwood Tennis Club, including coordinator for several leagues and club treasurer for six years while serving on the executive board.
On a personal note, Spencer has been married to his wife Nancy for 46 years. They have two daughters, both of whom are physicians. One is an OB/GYN (retired), and the other is a GYN/ONC. Nancy and Spencer have recently become grandparents. There are two boys in Pennsylvania, ages one and three, and two girls in Flagstaff, ages two and three. When it rains, it pours.
Spencer also logs 50 to 75 miles a week on his road bike when it’s not too cold. You can easily spot him in his yellow vest and helmet when he rides, or you can find him on tennis court 3 most days in July at 2 p.m., once it warms up, hitting tennis balls off the practice wall.
