Restorative yoga is an excellent way to create inner peace by promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and fostering a deeper connection to yourself. Here’s what you can do to make your experience most beneficial:
• Create a Calm Environment: Find a quiet, comfortable space, perhaps with low lights and soft, calming music. Use props such as bolsters, blankets, and blocks to support your body fully in each pose.
• Focus on Your Breath: Begin with slow, deep breathing to calm your nervous system. Practice diaphragmatic, or “belly,” breathing to help you shift into a relaxed state. Focus on the present moment and notice the sensations in your body and the stillness around you. Let go of any thoughts of the past or future.
• Set an Intention: Begin your session by setting a positive intention. Choose a thought or affirmation that is uplifting to you. You might focus on peace, balance, self-compassion, or gratitude.
• Regular Practice: Consistency is key. Do restorative yoga two or three times a week or whenever you are feeling stress. Even 15 minutes is helpful! You may start to notice that you react and respond to situations with more grace and ease.
• Close with Gratitude: End your session with a moment of gratitude. Thank yourself for taking time for self-care. Recharging your own battery will set you up for a better day.
After a recent class, one of the participants shared a comment: “I didn’t know how much I needed this until now. After taking your class today, I’m going to incorporate it into my ‘me time’ every week!”
Restorative yoga is done on the floor and is suitable for all fitness levels. Blocks and straps are provided. Please bring a mat and blankets. Feel free to bring other things from home that you can use for props, such as towels, bolsters, or cushions.
