The February meeting of AAUW (American Association of University Women) will be their annual International Dinner and local scholarship fundraiser on Monday, February 20 at 5:00 p.m. in the Palo Verde Clubhouse. The theme this year is The African Refugee Experience, and you will have the opportunity to hear music and stories from refugees who have resettled here from African countries. You will be able to meet and visit with them personally.
You will hear about one family’s journey escaping the war and terror in Somalia. A children’s choir from the Democratic Republic of Congo will raise your spirits with their harmonies. There will be displays of African masks and Makonde sculpture. You will be treated to a delicious dinner (beef stew over noodles or a vegetarian option) that is traditional in East Africa but also familiar to our palates.
Donations to the scholarship fund will be rewarded with gift certificates to restaurants and local businesses, always worth in excess of the donation value.
Tickets are only $22, and everyone is invited. Contact Diane Larson at 480-694-4544 or [email protected] to secure your reservation.
