Agave Quilt Guild

Mary La Tourelle

Our club has seven Friendship Groups which have been established to both encourage specific skills and strengthen relationships. The Machine Embroidery Group, facilitated by Jean Hedberg, meets in the Oakwood Sewing Room on the third Wednesday of the month from 9 a.m. to noon. The 35 people on the list are members of either Agave Quilters Guild and/or Sew-N-Sews. An average of 20 women attend the meetings. They don’t bring machines with them, since they are so bulky and heavy. Instead, the meetings focus on a “show and tell, question and answer” format with an emphasis on motivating members to try a new project and not be afraid to use their machines. At our April meeting we installed the following new officers for 2024-25: President Karen Pitts, Co-Vice Presidents Jean Hedberg and Barb Dinardo, Co-Treasurers Dianne Stoutenberg and Joyce Aune, and Secretary Mary La Tourelle. A big thanks goes to outgoing officers: President Betty Bogaard, Vice President Georgia Hartman, and Treasurer Sally Walby. We are still looking for a few committee chairs and would love to see some new members step up for the Education, Hospitality, and Membership Committees. During the break, cake was served as a preview to next year’s 30th anniversary celebration. Also at our April meeting we held a “garage sale” for members to bring in items they no longer wanted. Next month’s meeting will feature games, including Quilter’s Jelly Roll Strip Poker, and then we will have a break until September.

Our newsletter and publicity chair Shannon Lanning has developed a terrific website for our club! It’s still under construction, but make sure to check it out at agavequiltersguild.com. The site will function as a “one-stop shop” for all things related to our club.

Visitors are welcome to attend any of our meetings, which are held on the first Wednesday of the month (September through May) at 1 p.m. in the Navajo Room at Sun Lakes Country Club (25601 S. Sun Lakes Blvd).
