Friday Morning Easy
Play/Practice Bridge
Patricia Crowle
Everyone is welcome to the Friday Morning Easy Play/Practice Bridge group which meets each Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in the Ladies Card Room in the Cottonwood Activity Center.
This group is designed to be a very low-stress bridge experience for beginning to intermediate players who want to brush up on their play, or for those who have not played for a while and need a refresher. You are welcome to discuss the hands as you play. If you are unsure about a bid, you can ask anyone else in the room for advice. We encourage questions and discussion about the hands, bidding alternatives, and play options. We usually do not keep score, because the purpose of this group is to work on improving our play rather than making points.
You do not need to sign up. You can just show up. Because you do not need to sign up, we may not always have an even number of players to fill tables. For this reason, sometimes we share a dummy or we have observers/advisors or we rotate players. You are encouraged to bring your favorite instruction book and/or crib sheet for use during play or as a reference. This is not a class. There is no instructor.
If you have any questions about this group, please call or text Patricia Crowle at 406-581-4566. Our first official meeting will be Friday, Nov. 9.

Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge 499ers
Karin Hansen
Fall is in full swing, and many of our winter-only visitors have arrived and joined our year-round residents at the bridge table. The Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club provides several opportunities each week that are geared specifically for beginner, novice, or intermediate players. All games are played at Risen Savior Lutheran Church, 23914 S. Alma School Road. Cost is $6 for members of the club and $7 for non-members.
Beginners: Thursday mornings at 8:15 a.m. This game is for new players and those with less than 99 ACBL masterpoints. Director Maria Davis gives a short 15-minute lesson followed by the play of hands that are set up to reinforce the lesson. Instructors are on hand to answer individual questions and assist you during the bidding. Contact Anne Newman at [email protected] for more information.
Novice Players: Saturdays at 9 a.m. This game follows ACBL structure and is limited to established players who have less than 199 masterpoints.
Novice and Intermediate Players: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. This game is limited to players who have less than 499 masterpoints.
It gets busy during the winter months at the bridge club, so here are a few reminders to help the games flow smoothly during the high season: 1.) Be on time! This means checking in approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of the game. Make sure you are aware that your partner is planning to join you. It is very frustrating for a director to make all the seating assignments and then find out a pair is missing. 2.) Know your masterpoints. Every attempt is made by the directors to ensure that stratification and seeding are balanced. Knowing the total masterpoints of the partnership is helpful. 3.) Have a completed convention card that matches your partner’s. This is not just a suggestion… it is an ACBL rule. Make it a point to meet with your partner before the game to fill out a complete convention card. 4.) Keep up with the clock. During the game movement, it is important to stay on time. Failure to do so can mean that your pair will not be able to play the final board in the round. If everybody helps to follow these reminders and suggestions, our games at the Sun Lakes Bridge Club will run smoothly and be more enjoyable for everyone.
Speaking of enjoyable… the following pairs really enjoyed some great games during the month of September: On Sept. 26, Harvey Lowe and Cheryl Verlander had a 65.51% game. On Sept. 24, Bob Belton and Lily Poole had a 65.03% game, and also on Sept. 26, Kim Bauer and Betty Tuttle had a 63.28% game. Congratulations to these and all the players who did so well.

The Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club games are held at Risen Savior Lutheran Church (23914 S. Alma School Road).
Open games are held on Monday at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., Thursday at 1:30 p.m., and Saturday at 9 a.m. There also is a Novice game Thursday at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday a 499ers game at 1:30 p.m. (if there are enough entries in the field), and Saturday at 9 a.m. subject to having enough entries. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to game time!
If you are in need of a partner for any Open Games, please contact the Players’ Pairs Assistants, Eileen Utter, Kay Kennedy, and Carol Warner, at [email protected]. Please try the email first if you have access to a computer. Fees for the game are $6/person if you are a member of the club or $7/person if not a club member.
During the auction, if there is a “skip” bid, please make sure that you follow the rule and pause for an appropriate time (10 seconds) prior to making your bid. By doing this, you will not be giving your partner any unfair advantage in knowing that you were passing with any bid made. Also, make sure that you know what bids are “alertable” on the convention card. When making an alert, do not proceed to explain the alert unless asked by your opponents when it is their turn to bid.
Please use the link www.bridgewebs.com/sunlakes to alert the director that you and your partner are playing on any specific day. This should be done one to two days in advance. This will help the director get the proper seatings.
Top game for the month went to Sadu Marrott and William Stone with a 68.34% game. Congratulations.
