Computer Booters Update

Helen Seaton, Publicity Director

Someone from the Ed Robson Library will give a presentation at the Computer Booters Club general meeting on Nov. 9, on the many electronic services the library offers the Sun Lakes community. The Robson Library is part of the Maricopa County Library District. Some examples are the eMedia services, which include eBooks, magazines, and audiobooks; music, movies, and TV programs; and online books for kids. The Online Learning portion will include free online courses that you can take. You can even learn a new language. The meeting is from 1 to 3 p.m., with a time to socialize and get acquainted at 12:30 p.m. The meeting will be in the Cottonwood Computer Learning Center building. The meeting will also be available via Zoom. Members and first-time guests will be eligible for door prizes. There will be an election of new club officers at this meeting.

The Workshop on Nov. 16 will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Computer Learning Center’s Phoenix Room. People may come a half hour before the start of the meeting if they want to meet and get to know fellow club members. Nick Dobos will present a workshop on AirTags and SmartTags. This workshop will cover AirTag and SmartTag devices sold by Apple and Samsung designed to work with your iPhone or Android. Both products are intended to assist you in locating lost or misplaced items, such as car keys, purses, luggage, and pets, among others. The tags are attached by a small strap or a keychain you provide. Introduced in 2021, tags have burst on the scene and are now used worldwide. During this workshop, you will handle a SmartTag. The Samsung Smart Things app on a Galaxy A20 series gets into action showing a tag being located, both remotely in Oakwood and inside the CLC itself. Is the SmartTag slipped inside your pocket? The session identifies these hidden tracking threats. How to know if you are being tracked and what you can do to protect yourself and loved ones. Helpful web resources will be provided to show you how to attach the AirTag for iPhone and SmartTag for Androids. The workshop will be open to guests who have not attended a previous Computer Booters meeting.

Technology Recycle Event: The Computer Booters Club is partnering with Sun Lakes Rotary Club and AZStRUT (Arizona Students Recycling Used Technology) for a Technology Recycle Day on Saturday, Nov. 5. The event will be at the Sun Lakes 1 parking lot from 8 a.m. to noon.
