Desert Threads Quilters Explore New Quilting Techniques

March speaker Leilani Purvis

Jody Edwards, Desert Threads Quilt Chapter of AQG

One of the main goals of Desert Threads Quilters is to promote the art of quilting through education, events, and shared quilting experiences. At our monthly meetings, we strive to bring in speakers who will inspire us with new techniques, share their personal stories and quilts, and teach us how to expand our own quilting talents. Our March meeting offers all those things.

Leilani Purvis will be our speaker on Wednesday, March 12, at 9:30 a.m. Leilani is an internationally recognized fiber artist who shares her passion for animals, fibers, and quilting in her beautiful creations. She will present a trunk show of her work and take us on the journey that brought her to be recognized in Europe, the Americas, and Asia for her beautiful art.

In addition to her presentation on March 12, Leilani will be teaching two classes for the Desert Threads chapter. On March 17 Leilani will teach Thread Play where we will learn how thread painting can enhance and elevate our projects with hands-on practice on our own sewing machines. On April 2 Leilani’s class Thread Play 2 will help us continue our thread painting journey to add some pizazz to one of our projects.

Additionally, Bonnie Bobman, another nationally recognized quilt artist and previous speaker, will be teaching the class Around the Bend on March 5. This will be a fun class to bring colors and motion together through fabric.

All of our classes are held at the Oakwood Sewing Room. Class registration is required, and classes have applicable fees. Non-members may also register for the classes if space is available. Contact us through our email address listed below or sign up at our upcoming meeting.

Save the date for our April meeting on Wednesday, April 9, where we will have another amazing presenter. Cindy Lohbeck, the Dyehard Queen, will present a trunk show of stunning hand-dyed creations to tempt you into learning the art! Several of us have taken her classes, and she is outrageous in her passion for the art and teaching!

Desert Threads is a welcoming, inclusive group of quilters who love to learn, sew, and meet folks wherever they are on their quilting journey. Quilters and sewists of all skill levels from the Sun Lakes area and surrounding communities, including those who are not yet members, are encouraged to join us at our meetings. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the Cottonwood Computer Learning Center. The social chat starts at 9 a.m., and the meeting officially starts at 9:30 a.m. If you would like more information about our group or information on our upcoming classes, please send us an email at [email protected]. We can’t wait to meet you!
